Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet announced the arrest of a Houma man following a trespassing and violation of an active protective order complaint.  James Orell Gunn Sr, 49, was arrested for multiple charges in connection with the incident.

On February 1st, shortly after 1:00pm, Deputies with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division were called to a home in the 300 block of Bayou Blue Bypass Road, in reference to a trespassing complaint.  As Deputies responded, they learned that a male suspect came to the home, who was prohibited from having contact with the family, due to an active protective order.

When Deputies arrived, they immediately observed a male leaving the area near the residence.  Deputies took the male into custody and identified him as James Orell Gunn Sr. Deputies confirmed that an active protective order was in effect, requiring Gunn to stay away from the residence and all family members.  Deputies also learned that Gunn repeatedly contacted the family by phone, prior to arriving at the home, which was determined to be a violation of the protective order.

The investigation further revealed that Gunn was transported to the residence by a cab service, after arriving in Houma, and was unable to pay for the transportation.

As a result of the investigation, James Orell Gunn Sr. was arrested and transported to the Jerry J. Larpenter Criminal Justice Complex and booked on charges of Felony Violation of a Protective Order (3 counts), Theft of Services, Criminal Trespassing, and an unrelated Arrest Warrant.

Sheriff Tim Soignet praised the actions of the complainant, noting that their response played a critical role in the arrest.  “This incident serves as an important reminder and a training opportunity for the public,” Sheriff Soignet said.  “The victim did exactly what was necessary—recognized the violation, did not engage with the suspect, and immediately contacted law enforcement. Those actions allowed our Deputies to respond quickly and safely, and to take the suspect into custody.  Protective orders are only effective when violations are reported, and we encourage anyone in a similar situation to do the same.”

ARRESTED PERSONS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
