18-Year-Old Arrested on Murder Charge Following Grand Caillou Road Shooting

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet announced the arrest of Kasen Patrick Verrett, 18, of Houma, in connection with a shooting that occurred Tuesday night at a business in the 3700 block of Grand Caillou Road.  Verrett was arrested on charges of Second-Degree Murder, Obstruction of Justice, and Handling of Machine Guns in connection with the investigation.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m. on August 11, 2026, Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputies were called to a business in the 3700 block of Grand Caillou Road in response to a shooting complaint.  Upon arrival, Deputies located an adult male victim lying in the parking lot suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.  Medical First Responders immediately began providing emergency medical treatment, and the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Deputies immediately secured the location as a crime scene and began gathering preliminary information regarding the circumstances of the shooting and the person responsible.

A short time later, TPSO Detectives began developing information identifying the suspect vehicle as a newer-model, black SUV believed to have been occupied by two individuals. The vehicle information was quickly distributed to responding law enforcement personnel.

Shortly after the shooting, a vehicle matching the description was observed traveling northbound on Grand Caillou Road.  As Detectives attempted to locate the vehicle, the investigation led them to a neighborhood in the Woodlawn Ranch Road area.  While traveling in the 400 block of L Kirth Drive, a Detective was flagged down by a resident who provided information that a family member may have been involved in a shooting.  Detectives immediately observed a vehicle in the front yard of the residence that matched the description of the suspected vehicle.  Moments later, the resident identified the family member as Kasen Patrick Verrett, who emerged from the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives identified the second occupant of the vehicle as a juvenile male, through information provided by Verrett. Additional Detectives responded to a nearby residence, where the juvenile was located and brought in for questioning as part of the investigation.

During this portion of the investigation, Detectives learned that immediately following the shooting, the juvenile made several telephone calls to family members and provided information regarding what had occurred. Those communications ultimately proved to be vital to Detectives and greatly assisted in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

It is important to emphasize that although the juvenile was present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting, the subsequent investigation determined that he had no involvement in the criminal actions associated with this incident.  Detectives thoroughly investigated his presence and actions before, during, and after the shooting, and he was investigatively cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with this case.

As the investigation continued, Detectives obtained and reviewed a significant amount of digital evidence from the scene and surrounding locations.  Detectives also recovered and examined physical evidence associated with the shooting. The totality of the digital, physical, and testimonial evidence further substantiated Verrett’s alleged involvement while corroborating that the juvenile was not involved in the criminal actions.

During the course of the investigation, Authorities were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a local hospital, resulting in the investigation being classified as a homicide.

TPSO Detectives subsequently interviewed Verrett regarding the incident. During the interview, Detectives learned that Verrett knew the victim and that the two were family members. Detectives determined that the shooting stemmed from an encounter between Verrett and the victim in the parking lot of the business.  During questioning, Verrett admitted that as the victim began walking away, he retrieved an AR-15-style rifle from beneath the front seat of the vehicle and fired multiple rounds in the victim’s direction, striking him several times.  Evidence obtained during the investigation further indicated that Verrett then exited the vehicle, moved in the direction of the victim, and fired several additional rounds before returning to the vehicle and leaving the scene.  Detectives also developed evidence indicating that following the shooting, Verrett discarded evidence in a nearby cane field in an alleged attempt to conceal it from law enforcement.

Based on the evidence developed throughout the investigation, Detectives arrested Kasen Patrick Verrett and transported him to the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex, where he was booked on charges of Second-Degree Murder, Obstruction of Justice, and Handling of Machine Guns. Verrett remains jailed on a $2.2 million bond set by local judges.

Sheriff Tim Soignet praised the immediate response and thorough investigative efforts of everyone involved in the case.

“From the first Deputies who arrived at this scene to the Detectives who worked relentlessly to identify and locate those involved, every piece of information mattered”, said Sheriff Soignet.  “This investigation came together because our team followed the evidence, utilized every resource available, and refused to make assumptions about anyone’s involvement.  Just as importantly, that evidence allowed our Detectives to clearly establish that the juvenile present had no criminal involvement in this tragic incident.  Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and loved ones as they face an unimaginable loss, and our Detectives will continue working to ensure every aspect of this case is thoroughly investigated.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
